OES Memorial Garden
July 16, 2025
We are honored to be working with the Oregon Episcopal School on refreshing two important memorial spaces on their campus: The Mount Hood Memorial Garden and the Chapel Memorial Garden. Together, the two projects will enhance these existing spaces to clarify their intention, improve the entry and approach experiences, and support community gathering. Today we were on site to observe the construction of the circular basalt wall that will frame the center space of the Mount Hood Memorial. The wall will frame the edge of the forest clearing that honors the members of the 1986 Mount Hood tragedy and provide seating for individuals and groups to gather. The wall looks beautiful and we can’t wait to see the space take shape.
New Project! Aloha Affordable Housing
May 23, 2025
Understory is excited to be working with Bora on a new affordable housing project in Aloha, Oregon. The project is on a really unique site that forms the headwaters of Reedville Creek. A linear wetland makes up about a third of the site and connects across the street to the Intel Aloha wetlands, which connect to Reedville Creek. The existing wetland is degraded and will be restored as part of this project. This wetland restoration will be a really interesting opportunity to create a strong connection between the affordable housing development and nature. We are excited to be starting on such a meaningful project that will create great spaces for people alongside improving habitat for birds and wetland creatures.

Oregon Episcopal School: Middle School Courtyard
October 3, 2024
We recently worked with the Oregon Episcopal School (OES) to refresh their middle school courtyard. The courtyard is a space that is used daily by students but lacked a focal point. The central planting area was trampled and there were limited spaces for students to sit in the courtyard. We proposed a low wood deck around an existing Katsura tree. The deck created a warm center to the space that has re-energized the courtyard. Students use the platform to meet their friends during lunches and breaks and classes use it for outdoor meetings.
Sandcastle Playground
May 25, 2024
We started the Regatta Park Sandcastle Playground replacement project with a lovely open house in the park. The Sandcastle playground, a unique wood structure built with community help in 1992, has been part of generations of children’s imaginations and play time in Lincoln City. After 32 years the structure is showing significant signs of wear and the City has determined that the time has come to replace the structure. Community members of all ages joined us at the park and let know what they currently love about the existing playground so that we can consider those important qualities as we begin design on the new playground.
Plant Field Trip! Tillamook
Estuaries Partnership
February 29, 2024
The City of Lincoln City is partnering with the Tillamook Estuaries Partnership (TEP) to grow and provide locally-sourced native plants for Phase 1 of the New Community Park in Lincoln City. The new park will have large native planting areas that provide habitat and promote species diversity. TEP’s plants are grown from locally collected seeds at a nursery in Tillamook, making them intensely local and specifically adapted to thrive in coastal eco-systems. We are excited to be working with such a tremendous local resource. In the pictures above you see Acer Macrophyllum (Big Leaf Maple), wild-collected seeds, and Gaultheria shallon (Salal).

September 15, 2023
We are excited to be working with Bora Architecture and Interiors on a new affordable housing project on the Portland Community College SE Campus, which includes a courtyard for building residents. Our Just Future is developing the project which will bring much-needed affordable housing to the campus. Historically, the site had an orchard on it and today a grove of fruit trees dot the existing lawn. The courtyard design takes inspiration from this history and will incorporate edible berries and native plants alongside gathering and play areas for residents.
Open House for Lincoln City Community Park
April 28, 2023
The first open house for the new Community Park in the historic Taft neighborhood of Lincoln City was a great success! We had 120 community members join us on a sunny Friday evening to provide input on what activities they most want to do at the new park and share what they love most about Lincoln City. We learned how much people value the beautiful Siletz Bay in Taft and how excited everyone is to see active recreation coming to the southern part of Lincoln City.

We are excited to be partnering with Baysinger Partners, PACE Engineering, the State of Oregon, and Friends of Tryon Creek on the renovation of an existing open air shelter at Tryon Creek State Natural Area into an education pavilion nestled in the forest. The pavilion will house classrooms where people will have the opportunity to connect with and learn about the native landscape surrounding them. Hydrophyllum tenuipes (Pacific Waterleaf) and Trillium ovatum enchantingly carpeted the forest floor when we did our first visit to the site.
